Driving

Practical information

People must be over 18 for driving a car in Spain and 21 for renting a car.

Regarding the driving license:

  • If you are a citizen from any EU Member State, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein you only need your valid driving license.
  • If you are from a country different from the ones mentioned above, you should have an International Driving License.

Tourists driving their own cars should know that a Temporary Driving License can be required. Such Licenses can be requested at the Customs and will be valid for six months.

Regarding the motor insurance:

  • If you are from any EU Member State, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein, Andorra and Croatia you only need your motor insurance together with the current proof of payment.
  • If you are from Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Belorrusia, Israel, Iran, Morocco, Moldavia, Macedonia, Serbia, Montenegro, Tunisia, Turkey and Ukraine you will need to accept the Green Card System, which is the International Certificate for Liability Insurance.
  • If you are from a country different from the ones mentioned above, you should contract a Frontier Insurance Policy (a temporary liability insurance of compulsory subscription for motor vehicles).

Since the conditions may vary, we recommend you to contact with the Consulate or Embassy of Spain to check these requirements before you initiate the trip.
